Canada Defeats El Salvador to Advance to Semifinals at FIBA U16 Americas Women's Championship 2019, Qualifies for FIBA U17 Women's World Cup 2020

AYSÉN, CHILE (June 20, 2019) – Canada defeated El Salvador 61-15 on Thursday afternoon to advance to the semifinals at the FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2019.  With the victory, Canada also qualifies for next summer’s FIBA U17 Women’s World Cup 2020.

Avianna Thompson led all scorers with 13 points.  Tara Wallack added 11 points of her own in the victory, while Teah Stupar grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds.  Rebeca Roque scored six points in the loss for El Salvador.

The FIBA U16 Women’s Americas Championship 2019 will qualify the top-four teams to the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2020.

Canada earned a silver medal at the FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship 2017 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.  This will be Canada’s sixth appearance since FIBA U16 Women's Americas Championship began in 2009, with the country medalling in each of their previous five tournaments.
