Edmonton, Alberta (July 30, 2022) - The Canadian Senior Women’s 3x3 team went undefeated at the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series in Edmonton to finish the weekend as event champions.
After going 3-0 in Day 1 action on Friday, the Canadians defeated Force 10 by a score of 21-20 to advance to the Finals against the U.S. In the final game, Canada bounced back from a slow start to clinch the win 21-17 on a two-point shot from Michelle Plouffe.
It was a fantastic weekend for the 29-year-old who finished the weekend atop the player’s values list. She was also the top scorer in the event with 43 points, and finished second in highlights (17).
Plouffe finished with 13 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots against the U.S. as she led the Canadians to victory. Katherine Plouffe led all players with nine rebounds in the Final as Canada outrebounded the U.S. 24-16 in the win.
Canada overcame a 10-point effort (all on two-point shots) from the U.S’s Linnae Harper who helped the Americans jump out to a 6-1 lead and later hit a two to get the U.S. back within two points before M. Plouffe’s second game-winning bucket of the day.
After trailing 6-1, the Canadians slowly worked their way back into the game and a two-point shot from M. Plouffe had Canada within a point. A bucket from K. Plouffe tied the game at eight points apiece as Canada scored the next five points to go in front by four, 12-8. The Canadians wouldn't trail again, though the U.S. kept things close, but ultimately couldn't slow M. Plouffe who scored Canada's final seven points of the game.
M. Plouffe was lights out against the United States, shooting 5-for-6 from inside the arc and 4-for-10 on two-point shots as she led a Canadian team that was down a player in the final after Kacie Bosch suffered a leg injury in Canada’s victory against Force 10 and was sidelined.
In Canada’s first victory of the day, a 21-20 thriller against Force 10 in the Semifinals, M. Plouffe led all scorers once again with 11 points, while K. Plouffe finished with five points and six rebounds. Canada outrebounded Force 10 in the game 14-7 and made the extra possessions and trips to the free-throw line count.
The two teams traded baskets for much of the game until free throws from K. Plouffe and M. Plouffe gave Canada their first two-point lead of the game with 4:36 remaining. After a collision that left Bosch on the ground, she left the game due to injury. A two-point shot from Paige Crozon extended Canada's lead to three points.
A pair of free throws from M. Plouffe gave Canada the 18-14 lead with 4:09 remaining. A jumper and then a two-point shot from Kathryn Westbeld brought Force 10 within a point, 18-17, with 3:38 remaining. After free throws for both teams, Canada led 20-18, but Alexis Peterson hit a pair of free throws to tie the game at 20 points apiece with 2:36 remaining until M. Plouffe's game-winning layup with 2:28 on the clock.
Canada finished the weekend averaging the most points (21.0) in the event, as well as posting the best shooting value (14.7), and the fewest points allowed (15.6).
