MIES, Switzerland (February 2, 2021) – Canada has drawn Group A for the Group Phase of the Tokyo 2020 Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament.
The Draw Ceremony for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Basketball Tournaments, for both women and men, took place on Tuesday morning at the Patrick Baumann House of Basketball in Mies, Switzerland.
“We’ve been waiting for a year to see what the draw will look like in Tokyo, so we’re excited to finally know our pathway," said Lisa Thomaidis, Head Coach, Senior Women's National Team. "With 12 of the best teams in the world in Tokyo, every game is going to be a grind."
"There is a lot of work still to be done, but knowing our draw brings an added sense of excitement to our preparation," Thomaidis said.
Canada will face Korea, Serbia, and Spain during the Group Phase.
The Tokyo 2020 Women’s Basketball Tournament is scheduled for July 26 - August 8, 2021. Click here for the full schedule of the Tokyo 2020 Women's Olympic Basketball Tournament. The times of the Group Phase games will be announced at a later date.
The Group Phase will be played in a round robin format, with each team playing all other teams in its group (a total of 3 games for each team). The teams placed first and second in each group and the two best third-placed teams in the Group Phase qualify for the Final Phase. Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team remains ranked fourth in the FIBA World Ranking Women, presented by Nike, after the rankings were updated following the conclusion of the November window of the FIBA Women's EuroBasket 2021 Qualifiers.
