Canada Drops First Game to Slovenia, 92-80

(Toronto, Ont.) – The Canada Basketball Men's Basketball Team lost to Slovenia 92-80, playing in Rogaska Slatina, Slovenia.

“For our first game I thought we competed well”, said head coach Jay Triano. “Obviously we have to learn the schemes and how to play better with each other at both ends of the floor.”

Cory Joseph (Toronto, Ont.) and Jevohn Shepherd (Toronto, Ont.) led Canada with 11 points each.  Kamloops, B.C.’s Kelly Olynyk and Mississauga, Ont.’s Andrew Nicholson each had ten points.

Domen Lorbek led Slovenia with 19 points.

A late surge in the fourth quarter got Canada to within seven points, but Slovenia’s Zoran Dragic’s 3 pointer with just over a minute to play put the game out of reach.

Canada was playing the first of 11 games during its European Series just 24 hours after landing in Europe.

Canada plays Ukraine, tomorrow in Slovenia. Tip Off is 11:15 a.m. EDT.
