MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Aug. 30, 2025) – Canada fell 83-73 to Argentina in Saturday’s semifinal at the FIBA Men’s AmeriCup 2025, ending its push for gold but keeping a bronze medal still within reach.
Argentina seized control early with a 24-9 first quarter and held a lead that grew to 25 points. Canada fought back with a 26-14 fourth quarter, but the rally fell short.
“You have to find ways to win when you don’t play well," said head coach Nathaniel Mitchell. That didn’t happen today — that was a really good Argentina team.”
Marcus Carr led Canada with 16 points on 58.3 per cent shooting, adding four assists two rebounds, and a steal. Trae Bell-Haynes finished with 15 points, two rebounds and two assists, while Mfiondu Kabengele had 14 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.
Carr said Canada’s struggles on the glass limited their defensive pressure.
“If we’re not making shots and not getting offensive rebounds, then we can’t set up our defensive pressure the way we’d like,” Carr said. “Argentina did a really good job defending their own glass. We didn’t get many second-chance opportunities, and that put us at a disadvantage.”
Argentina shot 42.9 per cent from three-point range, led by captain Jose Vildoza’s 26 points on 7-of-9 shooting from deep, along with six assists.
“They shot the ball really well — Vildoza hit seven threes and we knew he’s a really good shooter,” Mitchell said. “They were prepared. It was just unfortunate that after how well we’ve played as a team, we didn’t have the production tonight.”
Despite forcing 14 turnovers and committing only seven, Canada connected on just 16.7 per cent from beyond the arc.
Mitchell stressed that the experience remains valuable for his group.
“This is all a great experience for a young team, and we’ll be back."
Canada will face the United States in the bronze-medal game Sunday (Aug. 31) at 4:40 p.m. ET / 1:40 p.m. PT, live on @Courtside1891.
