Canada falls to USA in bronze-medal game, finishes fourth at Men's AmeriCup

MANAGUA, Nicaragua (Aug. 31, 2025) — Canada came up just shy of the podium, falling 90-85 to the United States in Sunday’s FIBA Men’s AmeriCup 2025 bronze-medal game.

Marcus Carr led Canada with 16 points, seven assists and four rebounds on 63.6 per cent shooting. Mfiondu Kabengele also scored 16 with seven rebounds, while Kyshawn George added 14 points and five boards.

Captain Trae Bell-Haynes finished with nine points and five assists. Head coach Nathaniel Mitchell highlighted his team’s improvement as the game went on.

“Offensively, we got better as the game went on, just not enough,” Mitchell said. “We were three-for-17 tonight, four-for-24 last night. We were shooting probably 45 per cent coming into the last two games. We gotta figure out a way to win even when we're not playing well. We didn’t do that tonight.”

Canada trailed 49-37 at halftime and by as many as 17 in the third quarter before Carr and Leonard Miller sparked a run that cut the deficit to five entering the fourth. Javonte Smart and Tyler Cavanaugh scored 21 points apiece as the Americans held on late.

The U.S. shot 44.4 per cent from three-point range compared to Canada’s 17.6, while turnovers also hurt with Canada committing 14 to the Americans’ 10.

Despite the result, Mitchell pointed to the bigger picture, emphasizing that this summer was about building a foundation as much as chasing wins.

“This thing is about a four-year process till 2028 for our country,” he said. “We’re proud of the development, it’s just a disappointing result. Every time we step out as Canada, we expect to win.”

The 2025 AmeriCup marked the start of the LA 2028 Olympic cycle. The team finished fourth for the second consecutive AmeriCup tournament, with several players gaining senior international experience for the first time.
