Canada’s 3x3 Women’s National Team fell to France 21-12 in the final of the FIBA 3x3 Women’s Series Clermont-Ferrand Stop in France on Saturday.
Hortense Limouzin led all scorers in the victory with eight points while Laetitia Guapo added six points, including a pair of crucial two-pointers that helped to break the game open for France. The final was the lone loss at this series stop for the Canadians who were represented in Clermont-Ferrand by Cassandra Brown, Paige Crozon, Katherine Plouffe and Mackenzie Smith.
Plouffe finished with five points, five rebounds and five highlights in the final, but the Canadians couldn’t slow a red-hot France team, including Limouzin’s 6-for-7 shooting performance.
After Limouzin opened the scoring, the team’s traded baskets until a late 6-0 run from France to take control. A two-pointer from Guapo extended France’s lead to four, 14-10, and then Guapo scored on a reverse layup and hit her second two-pointer to move France in front by seven. A shot from Limouzin made it 18-10 France with two minutes remaining.
Brown hit a two-pointer for the Canadians, but Limouzin responded with a two of her own to get France to 20 points and then a reverse from Limouzin ended the game with 1:24 remaining.
Prior to Sunday’s meeting with France, Canada went a perfect 4-0 in Clermont-Ferrand and booked their trip to the final with a 21-18 victory against the Netherlands in the semifinal behind eight points from Crozon and seven points and nine rebounds from Plouffe.
The semis were a close battle, with the teams trading baskets to start until Crozon drilled a two-pointer and then drove to the basket to score to give Canada a three-point advantage. She then assisted Plouffe on a layup to make it a four-point game. The Netherlands didn’t stop pushing and mounted a comeback late. After consecutive scores, they got within two, 19-17, with a minute remaining, but a bucket from Crozon got Canada to 20 points and then Smith scored on a driving layup to end the game with 23.2 seconds remaining.
Canada started the day with a 21-19 overtime victory against Puerto Rico in the quarterfinal. After a pair of free throws from Mari Placido tied the game at 19 points in regulation, Brown quickly scored on back-to-back possessions for Canada to end the game in the extra session. Brown led all scorers with nine points and six rebounds in the victory, while Crozon added eight points for Canada.
