Canada qualifies for AmeriCup despite loss to Mexico

Box Score

SAN LUIS POTOSÍ, Mexico (Feb. 24, 2025) - Canada’s Senior Men’s National Team fell to Mexico 98-94 in their final game of FIBA Men’s AmeriCup 2025 Qualifiers, but despite the loss, qualified for this summer’s AmeriCup.

Canada’s 4-2 record and superior point differential helped them finish in top spot in Group C, earning them one of 12 berths for this summer's FIBA Men’s AmeriCup 2025.

Needing either a win, or loss by fewer than 20 points, Canada kept pace with Mexico in front of a raucous home crowd in San Luis Potosí.

Mfiondu Kabengele led the Canadian attack with 24 points (7-of-12 shooting) and eight rebounds, including a pair of highlight reel worthy alley-oops from Marcus Carr, who added13 points and eight assists.

Earning starts after coming off the bench on Friday vs. Dominican Republic, head coach Nathaniel Mitchell earned solid performances from his pair of starting lineup infusions. Jahvon Henry-Blair finished with 16 points, while Isiaha Mike finished with 15 points and 10 rebounds

Pack Cruz had a game-high 30 points for Mexico.

Despite the victory, Mexico fell short in qualifying for the AmeriCup, with Dominican Republic joining Canada as the two teams to emerge out of the three-way tie in Group C.

Canada and Dominican Republic will be joined at the AmeriCup by Argentina, Bahamas, Brazil, Colombia, host Nicaragua, Panama, Puerto Rico, Uruguay, United States and Venezuela.

The tournament is set for Aug. 23-31 in Managua, Nicaragua, as the nation plays host to the event for the first time in its 20th instalment.

Canada will be looking for its first-ever championship at the tournament, having won silver twice (1980 and 1999), and aiming to improve on a fourth-place finish in 2022.
