VALDIVIA, CHILE - The U18 Women's National Team used a huge second half rally to stun Brazil 58-52 in the semi-final of the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Women's Championship on Saturday.
Team Canada went on a 19-0 run spanning the third and fourth quarters to dig itself out of a 14-point hole. The Canadians will now face Team USA in the gold medal match at 8:15pm EST Sunday
"I'm very proud of our 40-minute effort from our girls tonight," says Carly Clarke, head coach of Team Canada. "They stayed composed and kept battling when Brazil got ahead.
"We will enjoy this victory over the talented Brazil team tonight and begin prepping to face a tough USA team in the final tomorrow."
Canada's starting five included Mikaela Brewer, Hailey Brown, Mikaela Dodig, Alyssa Jerome and Aislinn Konig. Click here for full team roster.
Jerome had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds, while Brown contributed 13 points and seven boards in Canada's triumph. Brazil's Raphaella Da Silva led all players with 18 points and 14 rebounds. For game boxscore click here.
Canada, which scored 25 of the game's final 30 points, won the rebound battle, 53-45, and held the advantage in both points in the paint (24-26) and fastbreak points (12-8).
The game started slowly, as the teams combined to score just eight points over the final 4:50 of the first quarter. Canada trailed 12-10 after 10 minutes of play. Brazil shot just 27.6% from the field and went the final 10:44 of the game without making a field goal.
Brazil began to open up a lead, using a 9-3 run late in the second quarter to go in front 30-20. A Summer Masikewich jumper for Canada with 18 seconds left cut the lead to eight going into halftime.
Canada fell behind by as much as 14, 47-33, in the dying moments of the third period but everything changed when Sarah Donovan hit a three-pointer before the quarter expired.
Building momentum off Donovan's shot, the Canadians erupted to score the first 16 points of the fourth quarter, and suddenly found themselves leading 52-47 with 5:33 remaining. A pair of free-throws by Izabela Leite put a halt to the Canadian run and made the score 52-49 midway through the fourth quarter, but that would be as close as Brazil could get.
This will be the fourth time in the last six FIBA U18 America's Championship for Women that Canada and the United States have squared off for gold. Team USA has won the previous three meetings. Both teams have already qualified for the 2017 FIBA U19 Women's World Championships
