IRAPUATO, Mexico (July 13, 2024) - Canada opened group play at the FIBA U17 Women’s Basketball World Cup 2024 with a strong 95-44 win over Egypt.

Canada ran out to an immediate 10-0 start to the first quarter, with Agot Makeer scoring six of those ten points. Makeer finished the game with a team-high 28 points, scoring 24 of those points in the first half of the game.

When asked what the group did well today, head coach Fabienne Blizzard said, “The way we pushed the ball, because it’s been a point of emphasis to score in transition. Our ability to share the ball, because we have multiple weapons on this team. Finally, our ability to defend, we’re very disruptive.”

This showed across the board, with Savannah Swords recording a 17-point, 10-rebound double-double to go with seven steals.

“It was good to play the first game and get our nerves out,” said Swords. “We could come together and start building as a team, I feel like we could use this game to see where our level is at and continue it to the next game.”

Yohana Fami was the third player in double-digits, finishing with 12 points and five rebounds. Deniya Prawl finished with eight points and six assists.

Canada will face Chinese Tapei in game two of group play tomorrow, July 14, at 5 p.m. ET / 2 p.m. PT.
