ANKARA, TURKEY – The Canadian Women’s team opened up the 2014 FIBA World Championship with a win against Mozambique, 69-54 in Ankara, Turkey.

Through the first half of action, Canada battled a persistent Mozambique on both ends of the court, but led 35-32 at the break.

“We were tight in the first quarter and made adjustments to extend our lead in the second,” said Head Coach Lisa Thomaidis. “Mozambique was a quality opponent. We have respect for them and they are here (at World's) for a reason. “

The third quarter saw the very best of Canada as they dominated Mozambique, limiting them to only 10 points in the frame to establish a 53-42 lead heading into the final period.

Mozambique would rally within the last remaining minutes of the fourth but Canada held on for the victory.

Kim Gaucher (Mission, BC), Tamara Tatham (Brampton, ON) and Miah-Marie Langlois (Windsor, ON) led the way for Canada, scoring 11 points each in the win.

In preparation for Canada’s next game, Thomaidis states, “We'll need to raise our leve?l of play for tomorrow where we'll play a strong Turkish team on their home court.”
