LILLE, France (August 3, 2024) – Following the conclusion of the Group Phase games on Saturday night, FIBA announced that Canada has drawn Olympic Games host France in the quarter-finals of the Men's Olympic Basketball Tournament at Paris 2024.
Tip-off is scheduled for Tuesday, August 6, at 12:00 p.m. ET / 9:00 a.m. PT at Bercy Arena in Paris. The game will be broadcast live on CBC and streamed on CBC Gem.
Following the Group Phase at Paris 2024, the eight qualified teams were assigned positions from first to eighth place and were divided into four pots.
Pot D consisted of the two-best-ranked teams (United States, Germany), Pot E of the third (Canada) and fourth ranked teams (Serbia), Pot F of the fifth (France) and sixth (Australia) ranked teams, and Pot G of the seventh (Brazil) and eighth (Greece) ranked teams.
The teams from Pot D were drawn against the teams from Pot G, while the teams from Pot E were drawn against the teams from Pot F. The teams from the same grouping in the Group Phase could not be drawn against each other in the quarter-finals.
The four quarter-final winners will advance to the semi-finals on Thursday, August 8. The winners of the quarter-finals played by the teams from Pot D cannot play each other in the semi-final games. The gold and bronze medal games will be played on Saturday, August 10.
Canada will face France in the quarter-finals for the second time in 24 years when the two teams last played at Sydney 2000. Tuesday will mark the fourth meeting all-time between the two countries in the men’s tournament at the Olympic Games.
The Canadian Senior Men’s National Team has had recent success against France, defeating the hosts 85-73 in a pre-Olympic exhibition game on July 19 at Co’Met Arena in Orléans.
Canada also defeated France by 30 points (95-65) in their tournament opener at the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023 in Jakarta. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had 27 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists in the win, becoming the first Canadian player to record a 20-point double-double in a Men’s World Cup game.
Entering play, RJ Barrett (21.0 points) and Gilgeous-Alexander (19.0) are ranked second and seventh, respectively, in scoring average in the tournament. Canada is ranked fourth in field goal percentage (.489) through the Group Phase. The Canadians have also held their opponents to 29.0% shooting from three-point range and have scored 22.3 points off turnovers ranking first in both categories.
