Canada Basketball would like to send condolences to the family and friends of Robert (Bob) Phibbs who died peacefully at home on March 15, 2018. He was 90 years old.
Born May 26, 1927 in Windsor, Ont., Phibbs enjoyed a distinguished collegiate basketball career at the University of Western Ontario. A five-time CIAU All Star and national champion, Phibbs was a catalyst for the Mustangs, regularly leading his team in several key statistical categories. A dual sport athlete, Phibbs also played football for the Mustangs and graduated from the University of Western Ontario business school in 1949.
Following his time at Western, Phibbs moved on to the Tillsonburg Livingston's where he won Canadian Intermediate and Senior titles.
At the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland, Phibbs captained Canada, averaging 7.8 points per game as the team went 3-3 at the tournament to finish tied for 13th.
Phibbs was inducted into the UWO Sports Hall of Fame (1981), the Tillsonburg Hall of Fame (2004), the Canadian Basketball Hall of Fame (2007) and the City of Windsor Sports Hall of Fame (2008).
