MIAMI, Florida (November 13, 2021) -- The second day of the inaugural FIBA 3x3 AmeriCup 2021 tournament was another successful one for Canada’s 3x3 teams. This time, it was the Canadian men’s 3x3 team that had a strong showing in their first day of action at the event. Kicking off Saturday’s schedule in Bayfront Park, Miami, the team earned a blow-out 22-4 victory against 12th-seeded Saint Lucia and followed that up with a 21-7 win against seventh-seeded Argentina to go 2-0 and advance to Sunday's men’s quarterfinals.
Canadian 3x3 legend Steve Sir added to his personal highlight reel in the team’s first game against Saint Lucia as he finished perfect from the floor, shooting 7-for-7 from long-range to help Canada jump out to a quick 16-3 lead. With two-seeded Canada ahead 20-4 after a two from Bikram Gill, Sir finished things off for the Canadians, hitting his seventh two-pointer of the game to seal the 22-4 victory.
“We’re so excited to be here representing our country, playing alongside our women’s team and being part of this inaugural event,” Sir said after the team’s second victory of the day. “This is really special for us and we feel lucky that we got two wins today.”
Coming into the event, Sir announced that this would be his final time representing Canada in the red and white after a five-year 3x3 playing career, and nine years playing professionally overseas.
In the second game of the day, Canada’s offence once again dominated its opponent as the Canadians finished with 17 made shots to Argentina’s seven in a 21-7 victory. After Sir carried the Canadians with his red-hot shooting against Saint Lucia, it was a team-effort offensively against Argentina with balanced scoring across the board for Canada as Bikramjit Gill and Adika Peter-McNeilly each scored seven points and Sir added six, including the two-pointer that sealed the victory. Alex Johnson played the assist-man to perfection against Argentina, easily finding his teammates in positions to score.
Though Argentina was on the board first, Canada quickly jumped ahead and an offensive putback plus free throw from Gill extended the advantage to 7-3. After two-point shots from McNeilly and Sir, Canada led 11-3, before Argentina would score again. A quick four-point flurry from Sir made it 17-5 Canada and the team easily rolled to 22 from there.
With the perfect 2-0 performance on Saturday, the Canadian men’s team joins the Canadian women in advancing to Sunday’s quarterfinals.
