The second game for the Development Men’s National Team ended in a rout as Canada defeated the United Arab Emirates (UAE) by a score of 137-43. The victory gives Canada a 2-0 record following Sunday’s 84-69 win over Sweden. The UAE falls to 0-2 after its tournament-opening loss to the United States.

Team Canada emerged from the gates looking for a quick start and raced out to the lead with an 18-0 run in the match’s first four minutes. The UAE responded from there, but Canada continued to play well and finished the first frame with a 31-12 lead. Seven different scorers notched points in the second to extend the DMNT’s advantage to 67-27 at halftime.

The second half played-out in much the same way as Canada continued to pour-on the offence. A Thomas Scrubb basket seven minutes into the third quarter put all the Canadians on the game’s score-sheet. With 36 seconds remaining in the quarter, Team Canada reached the century mark with Brady Heslip’s 16th and 17th points on the day. The Canadian side stepped-up its defensive efforts in the fourth and held the UAE to four points. Meanwhile, the DMNT notched its highest output in a quarter with 37. The 94-point margin of victory is the same differential that the UAE had suffered the day before at the hands of Team USA.

Kentucky Wildcat Kyle Wiltjer tied Burlington, Ontario’s Heslip for the game-high in points with 22 each. Heslip continued to have the hot hand from long-range and finished with four three-pointers in the match. Dwight Powell finished with 21 points on an efficient 10-for-12 performance – the same shooting display put on by Wiltjer. Calgary, Alta. native Jordan Bachynski ended with a double-double of 12 points and 17 rebounds. The game’s statistics can be viewed here.

“The first thing that we focus on is our defence and that really leads to easy baskets. We’re an unselfish team. We have very talented players so we can all share the ball," Wiltjer told Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS), when asked about the team's 26 assists in the game.

Following a training day, the DMNT will resume the competition on Wednesday with a bout against Australia; the match is set to tip-off at 5:00 a.m. (ET). Australia owns a 2-0 record following victories over the Czech Republic and Sweden. Canada plays the Czech side on Thursday before wrapping-up the preliminary round on Friday against the United States.
