The third annual FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships will feature both a men’s team and women’s team representing Canada. The competition will see some of the finest 3x3 teams gathered from across the globe compete for 3x3 supremacy. The inaugural FIBA 3x3 U18 World Championships took place in Rimini, Italy in 2011 while the 2012 edition was held in Alcobendas, Spain.

At the first-ever FIBA Americas 3x3 U18 Championship in Washington, D.C., the 3x3 U18 Men’s National Team captured the bronze medal. Three of the four members of that squad – Tyrell Bellot-Green (Mississauga, Ont.), Brody Clarke (Toronto, Ont.) and Kalif Young (Toronto, Ont.) – will also make their way to Jakarta for the World Championship. Kitchener, Ont. native Jamal Murray has withdrawn from the competition due to injury. Coach Dave DeAveiro will serve as the team leader.

The 3x3 U18 Women’s National Team emerged from Washington with a silver medal. Shay Colley (Brampton, Ont.), Daneesha Provo (Dartmouth, N.S.), Shantelle Valentine (Brampton, Ont.) and Eternati Willock (Scarborough, Ont.) return to form the Canadian contingent headed to the Indonesian capital. Agnes Borg will guide her charges during the tournament as team leader.

Executive director of Canada Basketball, Michele O’Keefe, noted the importance of this competition to the further development of the sport. “These World Championships are the pinnacle of performance in 3x3. The talent that will be on display in Jakarta will demonstrate to the world that 3x3 is the next step in the evolution of our sport. Team Canada and the teams from around the world will learn and grow through this invaluable experience.”

Canada will be one of 32 teams competing on the men’s side while the women will feature 24 nations in action. Both tournaments will conclude on the evening of September 29 with one men’s team and one women’s team being crowned world champions. In-depth coverage of the event can be found on the tournament’s official website. Countries that perform well in the competition, and those recognized as being dedicated to the continued growth of 3x3, will be chosen to participate in the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing, China.
