SCOTLAND – Canada dropped their first exhibition game against Great Britain, 70-57 in Edinburgh, Scotland. This was Canada’s first game since the team roster was named for the FIBA World Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Women that will be played in Ankara, Turkey starting June 25th.

“Our execution lacked as Great Britain took away some of the things we wanted to run,” said head coach, Allison McNeill. “Great Britain played very well tonight; they were very aggressive getting to the foul line thirty-one times in the game compared to our twelve times.”  

In the first half, Canada played great defense and allowed Great Britain to shoot only 30 percent from the field, which helped Canada earn a 28-24 lead at the half.  

When the second half began, Canada came out slow, while Great Britain stormed out to start the half. Canada struggled offensively in the third quarter and only produced 9 points, which gave Great Britain the opportunity to make a run and solved the Canadian defense. Great Britain recorded 18 in the quarter, which gave them the 42-37 lead entering the fourth quarter. In the final frame, it was more the same for Canada. Canada was unable to answer the Great Britain attack, as Great Britain built to their lead and won 70-57.

“This was a disappointing game for us today, we didn’t really come prepared from the tip-off to play,” said Canadian forward, Kim Smith. “Good news is we have another chance tomorrow to redeem ourselves.”

Kim Smith (Mission, BC) had a game-high 19 points, 7 rebounds and Natalie Achonwa (Guelph, ON) had a game-high 8 rebounds and 15 points in the game.

Canada will play Great Britain Women’s Team again on Sunday and then play in an exhibition tournament in France next week with Croatia, Czech Republic and France.
