The Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL), the largest league of any professional sport in Canada, unveiled a 2022 season schedule Thursday that will see a record 100 games played in 69 days across 10 Canadian cities in six provinces. The CEBL’s fourth season tips off with tripleheader action Wednesday, May 25, culminating with playoff rounds that begin August 4.

Expansion franchises in Scarborough, Montreal, and St. John’s, Newfoundland have grown the CEBL to 10 teams located from British Columbia to Newfoundland. It is considered globally as one of the top FIBA leagues in the world and the preeminent FIBA league in North America with rosters stocked with past and future NBA players, current NBA G League players, and players who have competed in other top international pro leagues and with major NCAA and U SPORTS programs.

The May 25 opening night will see the Montreal Alliance making their debut in Hamilton at 7 p.m. ET. The Fraser Valley Bandits take on Ottawa in the nation’s capital at 7:30 p.m. ET, and the Saskatchewan Rattlers host 2021 CEBL runner-up Niagara at 7:30 p.m. CST.

“Our fourth season is guaranteed to be our best yet with more teams, more games, more players, and more excitement for our fans in the stands,” said Mike Morreale, commissioner and chief executive officer of the CEBL. “With an off-season filled with some incredible CEBL headlines as five of our players earned their way into the NBA, this season promises to be bigger and better as we look forward to delivering a fantastic live entertainment experience for all of our games after the limitations imposed by COVID-19 the past two seasons.”

The 2022 Championship Weekend takes place in Ottawa, August 12-14. Host Ottawa will automatically be seeded into Championship Weekend, as will the team with the best regular season record (or second-best record should Ottawa finish with the best record). New this year is the addition of post-season play-in games that will feature the teams ranked fifth through eighth in the final regular season standings. The play-in games will be held August 4-5 at the site of the higher seeded team, with the winners advancing to the quarterfinals August 7.

The regular season schedule includes nine tripleheaders and 23 doubleheaders. All games will be live streamed internationally on CEBL’s OTT platform, CEBL+.Games will also be available to stream live in Canada via cbcsports.ca, the CBC Sports app for iOS and Android devices, and the free CBC Gem streaming service.

With Montreal making its league debut May 25, the expansion Scarborough Shooting Stars open their inaugural season at Guelph on May 26, and the Newfoundland Growlers play their first CEBL contest June 3 when they host defending league champion Edmonton in St. John’s. The rematch of the 2021 CEBL Championship game will take place May 27 when the Stingers launch their regular season with Niagara at the Edmonton Expo Centre.

A league created by Canadians for Canadians, the CEBL has the highest percentage of Canadian players of any professional league in the country, with 75 percent of its current rosters being Canadians. Players bring experience from the NBA, NBA G League, top international leagues, the Canadian National team program, and top NCAA programs as well as U SPORTS.
