Lakehead 74-61 Cape Breton

Ben Johnson, a 6-0 senior guard from Pictou, NS, led Lakehead with 25 points including 7-10 shooting from long range. Hamilton, ON native Dwayne Harvey added 16 points, eight assists and six rebounds for the Thunderwolves who move on to the Semifinals.

First Team All-CIS winner James Dorsey had 12 points on 4-15 shooting in the loss while being defended by CIS Defensive Player of the Year Greg Carter. Arild Geugjes added 12 points for Cape Breton who entered the contest ranked #2 in the tournament after finishing their regular season 19-1 and winning the Atlantic championship.

Cape Breton held the lead 33-29 at the half-time break and the teams were tied at 52 points apiece midway through the fourth quarter when Lakehead put together a 6-0 run. Soon the Thunderwolves lead ballooned to double-digits as the rowdy Capers fans who showed up in droves became subdued.

Lakehead will take on Ottawa, the winners of the other afternoon Quarter-Final matchup, Saturday at 5:30. Cape Breton moves to the consolation bracket.

Ottawa 82-70 McGill

Led by 6-5 senior forward Warren Ward’s 23 points and 11 rebounds, the Ottawa University Gee-Gees advanced to the CIS National Semifinals with an 82-70 win over McGill.

Ottawa forward Gabriel Gonthier-Dubue put in 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds, point guard Mike L’Africain scored 13 and freshman wing Caleb Agada was an X-factor with 11 points and six rebounds.

Vincent Dufort led McGill with 18 points and nine rebounds and Te’Jour Riley added 16 points in the Redmen’s first appearance in the Final 8 in 33 years.

After a close first half where Ottawa took a narrow 28-27 lead, the Gee-Gees outscored the Redmen by 11 points in the second half and broke through the notoriously tough McGill defence.

The Gee-Gees move on to the Semifinals to face a tough Lakehead squad Saturday at 5:30, while the Redmen will play Cape Breton in consolation.

Acadia 89-80 UBC

Axemen sophomore guard Tyler Scott shot the lights out, going 10-12 from the field for 29 points including seven three-pointers, and First Team All-CIS 6-10 forward Owen Klassen finished with 15 points and four rebounds in the win.

UBC senior 6-1 guard O'Brian Wallace finished with a team-high 26 points and also grabbed seven rebounds, and 6-7 forward Brylle Kamen added 16 points and six rebounds.

The Thunderbirds lost senior 6-4 second team All-CIS guard Doug Plumb to injury midway through the fourth quarter after he dove for the ball at the halfcourt line and knocked his head on the court. Plumb stayed down for a few minutes and was taken off on a stretcher.

The next step for Acadia is a Final Four date with the #1-ranked Carleton Ravens Saturday at 8:15. UBC moves on to the consolation round.

Carleton  -  Victoria

With 15 points and seven rebounds, first-year Raven Clinton Springer-Williams was the player of the game for the Ravens. CIS Player of the Year Phil Scrubb registered 13 points and Kevin Churchill added 11 more in a dominant team effort where the bench outscored the Victoria bench 37-13.

Mike Acheampong, a 6-3 senior guard from Etobicoke, scored a team-high 13 points for the Victoria Vikes, who shot just 2-29 from long range as a team.

Early in the game Victoria had a 14-11 lead before Carleton buckled down and showed why they earned the #1 rank in the Final 8 and for the CIS during the regular season. The Ravens outscored the Vikes 23-3 in the second quarter and never looked back.

Carleton now moves on to face Acadia in the CIS Semifinals Sunday at 8:15. Victoria now faces their rival UBC Thunderbirds in the consolation round.
