(Toronto, Ont. – August 12, 2014) – The Cadet Men’s National Team entered the round-of-16 on a high after reeling off two straight victories. They drew Angola for their first matchup in the elimination round. Canada looked incredibly impressive as they led from the outset and came away with the huge 106-59 win.  

The Canadian squad once again demonstrated that there is strength in diversity. The scoring attack was incredibly well-balanced as Coach DeAveiro went 12-deep. Every player made an impact to the stat sheet; 11 of 12 contributed to the scoring column, with eight players scoring eight or more points, five of which were in double figures. Canada was led by Koby McEwen’s (Toronto, Ont.) game-high 23 points (5-13 FG) & seven rebounds. Jamal Murray (Kitchener, Ont.) chipped in with 15 points (6-9 FG), four rebounds, & a team-leading three assists, while Kalif Young (Toronto, Ont.) added a double-double, dropping 11 points (5-7 FG), grabbing 10 rebounds, and swatting a game-high two blocks.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  

Angola was led by Centre Silvio De Sousa’s 14 points (7-15 FG), and 14 rebounds in 31:04 of action.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

In the first quarter, it took a bit of time for each team to feel the other out. A passionate Coach Dave DeAveiro could be heard directing his squad from the sidelines throughout the entire frame. His in-game tutelage was effective as Canada held the early 25-19 lead after one.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    

In the second frame the Canadians went on a tear, outscoring Angola 31-7 in the quarter. By halftime the red and white had built up a 30-point lead and led Angola 56-26.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                  

The third belonged to Canada once again as they outscored Angola 24-12 in the frame and pushed their lead to 42 points, 80-38 heading into the fourth.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                

The fourth was a tighter quarter as Angola did what they could to chip away at the huge Canadian lead, but the deficit was just too great and Canada was able to easily hold off the Angolan charge and cruise to the 106-59 victory.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                

Head Coach Dave DeAveiro enjoyed the win but is looking onward: “Good win for us against a tough, physical Angola team. The road will continue to be tougher moving forward.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              

Focus and preparation are high on DeAveiro’s priority list: “We have to be diligent in our preparation and continue to play as a team in order to be successful.”                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                            

Canada is now 3-1 at the 2014 FIBA U17 World Championship. They now move onto the Quarter Finals on August 14, 2014, where they are set to face the winner of United Arab Emirates vs. Serbia.
