Canada’s Cadette’s Women’s National Team began the U17 FIBA World Championship with a 76-73 overtime loss.

Bridget Carleton put on a spectacular performance to open the tournament, finishing with 20 points on 7-12 shooting and grabbing eight rebounds. Carleton also had three assists. Lauren Yearwood was another offensive force for Canada, scoring 12 points in 18 minutes of play.

Canada was undone by poor free throw shooting -- finishing with a team total of six makes on 14 attempts – and 20 turnovers.

A relentless attack from Hungary put Team Canada in an early hole, down 20-11 after one quarter. Slowly, the CWNT chipped away at the lead and used three-point shots to their advantage. Canada finished the night shooting 9/23 from beyond the arc.

The balanced offence of Hungary stood out in Canada’s opening game of the FIBA World Championship. Four Hungarian players finished with double digits scoring, including an 18-point performance from Debora Dubei.

Now, Canada will regroup and face-off against Korea, who are also 0-1 after the opening day of the tournament. The squad will look to slow down Ji Su Park, who started the tournament with an ultra-productive game: 22 points, nine rebounds, four assists, three steals and three blocks. The game will be streamed at youtube.com/FIBA and is set to tip at 2:15 p.m. EST.
