ST. CATHARINES, Ont. (August 9, 2022) – Day 2 of the boys and girls basketball tournament at the 2022 Canada Games went on Tuesday.

Alberta flag bearer Delaney Gibb lived up to her top billing, scoring 31 points as she helped lead her Team Alberta past Team Saskatchewan, 72-60, showcasing her impressive handle, her sweet stroke from outside and her fluid athleticism with and without the ball. The 31 the Alberta point guard dropped was just four away from the single-game Canada Games record of 35 by Janelle Bekkering, also of Alberta, in 2005.

Elsewhere in Pool A, Team Quebec got the best of Team British Columbia, 70-64, in a seesaw contest. In Pool B, Team Ontario blew the doors open in the fourth quarter in what was a tightly-contested affair with Manitoba to come away with an 83-55 victory, while Team P.E.I. topped Team Northwest Territories 73-37. And in Pool C, Team Newfoundland and Labrador downed Team Yukon 114-16 and Team New Brunswick held on to defeat Team Nova Scotia 66-64. Nova Scotia was chipping away at New Brunswick’s lead all throughout the second half and came within one with less than 14 seconds to play and had a chance to tie the game with 4.2 ticks left, but failed to convert.

In the boys’ tournament, the highly-anticipated matchup between Ontario and Quebec was every bit the nail-biter most expected as Quebec’s Jordann Dumont hit a turnaround jumper as time expired to initially send the game to overtime. Unfortunately for Quebec, they couldn’t come up with similar magic in the extra frame, as Ontario ultimately pulled away and took this edition of the two provinces’ rivalry.

Additionally, Saskatchewan edged past New Brunswick in Pool A play. Nova Scotia beat Manitoba in Pool B and P.E.I. managed to topple Northwest Territories, also in Pool B. In Pool C, Newfoundland and Labrador defeated Yukon, while B.C. improved to 2-0 with a win over Alberta.
