Dr. Barbara Hamilton-Hinch elected to Canada Basketball Board of Directors

TORONTO, Ont. (June 29, 2022) - Canada Basketball announced several updates to its Board of Directors following the organization’s Annual General Meeting, held virtually on Wednesday afternoon.

Dr. Barbara Hamilton-Hinch was elected a Class B Director, while Shannon Hosford and Leah MacNab were nominated Class A Directors, effective immediately.

“Canada Basketball is committed to advancing equity, diversity and inclusion to ensure that the game is safe and accessible for all who play, coach, or officiate basketball in Canada,” said Brian Cooper, Chair, Canada Basketball Board of Directors.  “To add an expert in this space, Dr. Barbara Hamilton-Hinch, to our Board of Directors is an essential next step for our organization as we continue to grow.”

Dr. Hamilton-Hinch is an Associate Professor, Recreation and Leisure Studies and Assistant Vice‑Provost Equity and Inclusion at Dalhousie University and has conducted extensive research on racism and diversity.  Her work primarily explores the impact of structural, systemic, and institutional racism on diverse populations, particularly people of African descent.  Originally from Beechville, Nova Scotia, Dr. Hamilton-Hinch is a former basketball official and, as a member of the Canada Basketball Board of Directors, will assist the organization in advancing its efforts to improve the diversity and experience of referees and officials across Canada.

Canada Basketball would like to thank Rob Wright and Basil Kavanagh for their commitment to the organization and its Board of Directors.

“On behalf of Canada Basketball and our Board of Directors, I wish to extend my sincerest gratitude and appreciation to both Rob and Bas for their commitment to helping advance the sport of basketball here in Canada over the past several years,” Cooper said.

“Rob has held various positions while a member of the Board since 2012, and recently was instrumental in the merger of CABO into Canada Basketball's Canadian Basketball Officials Commission (CBOC),” said Cooper.  “Always an advocate for our PTSO partners across the country, Bas strongly supported developing the game on the East Coast and was instrumental in bringing World Cup Qualifier events to Halifax and St. John’s.”

Scott Lake was appointed Vice Chair, while Shannon Hosford was selected to the Executive Committee as a Director At Large. Bidulka and Marc Eversley were re-elected as Class A Directors. Bidulka will continue in the role of Treasurer, a position he has held since 2014.
