(Toronto, Ontario) – Canada Basketball has announced a national age group assessment camp that will be held at the University of Toronto, Mississauga, for a group of invited female athletes identified through the national identification process. The camp runs from March 23 – 25. Arriving from coast to coast, 45 girls will take part in the camp, which includes on and off-court sessions and be assessed by national coaches.

This assessment camp, combined with previous work done identified age-eligible athletes, will assist in determining the pool of athletes that will be chosen for each of the Cadette Women's National Team (CWNT) and Junior Women's National Team (JWNT) programs. Both teams will be competing in a FIBA sanctioned championship tournament this summer.

The JWNT will compete at the FIBA Americas U18 World Championship for Women in Puerto Rico on August 15-19. The tournament features teams from 8 countries in the FIBA America’s zone with players born in 1994 or later.

Last summer in Chile, the JWNT qualified for the FIBA U19 World Championship and came first in their division by going undefeated in the group stage (6-0). In the quarter-final match versus Spain, Canada lost a tough match 55-69. The team ended up placing in 5th with an overall record of (8-1). The JWNT qualified and participated in the last four FIBA U19 World Championships.

The 2012 CWNT will be competing this summer at FIBA U17 Championship for Women in the Netherlands from August 17 – 28. The CWNT qualified for this tournament by beating Puerto Rico in the third place game of the 2011 FIBA Americas U16 Championship for Women. The team finished with a (4-1) record overall in the tournament. This will be Canada's second appearance in the FIBA U17 Championship
