More than a year after opening, the Saville Community Sports Centre continues to draw rave reviews.

But considering the source, the latest praise might carry a bit more weight than usual.

Allison McNeill, coach of the Canadian women’s basketball team that made a stirring run to the quarterfinals at the recent London Summer Olympics, made her first visit to the SCSC on the weekend to participate in Basketball Alberta’s annual coaching conference, at a time when Basketball Alberta continues working to bring Basketball Canada programming to the multi-sport facility on the University of Alberta’s south campus.

“She certainly sees the potential, the merit and the value in working out of a central training facility of the quality and magnitude that the Saville Centre offers,” says Paul Sir, Basketball Alberta’s executive director. “What I took from our conversations is that she is very excited and supportive of the concept.”

McNeill says the 220,000-square foot facility, which includes nine regulation-sized basketball courts, “would be a great place to train.”
