(Toronto, Ont.) – The Junior Men’s National Team completed a sweep of their pool at the U18 FIBA Americas Championship with their 91-70 defeat of Puerto Rico.

Canada’s win means they have qualified for the U19 FIBA World Championship for Men, hosted by Greece in 2015.

It was a thorough dismantling from Canada, as they dominated from the opening tip. Chris Egi played his best game of the tournament so far, scoring 20 points, grabbing 14 rebounds and finishing with four blocks. Victor Jusino, who finished with 13 points on 6-6 shooting, paced Puerto Rico.

Dillon Brooks continued to put points up in bunches for the U18 Canadian crew, scoring 26 points on 9-17 shooting, while pulling down six boards and picking up six steals.

Team Canada had a significant rebounding advantage, and that can be attributed to solid perimeter defence and athleticism. In all three games, teams have been bothered around the rim by the length of the Canada’s defenders. Opponents average a 34.6 field goal percentage in games against Team Canada during the round robin competition.

“Extremely proud of our 12 athletes and our staff, on coming together and accomplishing stage one of our goal, qualifying for the 2015 Worlds in Crete, Greece,” said head coach Roy Rana. “Next stage, the hunt for a medal. Canada should take great pride in what these kids have accomplished and more importantly the way they have represented our nation."

Canada’s next game will be on June 23 at 5:15 p.m EST. The opponent is to be determined, and will be announced as soon as the information becomes available via Twitter, Facebook and basketball.ca.
