KANSAS CITY, MO (January 23, 2019) - The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) International Committee is pleased to announce two winners of the 2019 NABC International Lifetime Achievement Award.  This year’s recipients Coaches John Dore (Canada) and Dan Peterson (Italy) will be honored, both for their individual career coaching accomplishments and lifetime body of work impacting the game of basketball across the globe.  They will be recognized at the NABC Convention in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA on Apr. 4-8th, 2019.

John Dore
(Concordia University/Canadian National Team Program) has had a long an illustrious career coaching in Canada concluding a 26- year run as the Head Coach at Concordia University (Montreal) in 2015. Along the way he won 486 games, took the Stingers to 13 National Championship Tournaments winning the National Title in 1990 and placing second in 1995 and 2005.  

John Dore was named CIAU Coach of the Year and received the Stuart W. Aberdeen Memorial Trophy as CIS (Canadian Interuniversity Sport) Men’s National Basketball Coach of the Year, in 1991.  In 1995, he was named University Coach of the Year, by the Foundation for Quebec University Athletics.  John also received Concordia University’s highest faculty honor in 2015, the Outstanding Staff Award.  Most recently John was selected to be inducted into the Montreal Hall of Fame taking place Apr. 9th, 2019.

A Graduate of St. John’s Prep (Brooklyn, NY), John teamed in High School with long-time NABC Coach Jim Baron.  St. John’s produced other basketball notables such as Basketball Hall of Famers Frank and Al McGuire, and NBA Starts Johnny Bach and Vern Fleming.  John played collegiately at Norman College (GA) and later starred as team captain at Loyola of Montreal (becoming Concordia University), before starting his coaching career as an Assistant Coach at Concordia in 1980 and assuming Head Coaching duties in 1986.

John served on the International level as Assistant Coach of Canada's Junior Men’s National Team in 1998, and Head Coach of several Canadian National Teams, including Canadian entries at World University Games (Universiade) and the Maccabiah Games.  At the 2013 Maccabiah Games John was assisted by former NBA great A’mare Stoudemire.  Coach Dore is a past president of the Basketball Coaches Association of Canada, and a highly respected and still active member of the NABC International Committee making significant contributions for the past two decades toward the mission of building bridges between basketball coaches around the world. In retirement he continues to travel to various Universities observing and interacting with Coaches around Canada and America.
