Kia Nurse and Trae Bell-Haynes have been named the Toyota Canada Players of the Week for the week of September 20-26.
Bell-Haynes has had an unbelievable start to his ACB career with Rio Breogan (Spain) averaging 16 points, 2 rebounds, 4 assists in two games over the past week shooting 4/7 from 3 point line and 59% from the field overall, as Breogan got off to a great start in the domestic league. After spending four years at the University of Vermont (NCAA), Bell-Haynes played professionally overseas in both Germany and Finland. Since then, the 25-year-old who played for the Milwaukee Bucks NBA G League affiliate, the Wisconsin Herd, joined the Niagara River Lions in the Canadian Elite Basketball League (CEBL) last year. Most recently, Bell-Haynes represented Canada at the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Victoria, BC this past June.
Nurse scored 12 points and 6 rebounds in the WNBA Quarter Finals leading the Phoenix Mercury to a win over the Seattle Storm. The 6’0” guard from Hamilton, ON attended the University of Connecticut (NCAA) where she was a two-time NCAA champion. In 2018, Nurse was drafted 10th overall in the 2018 WNBA Draft to the New York Liberty. In her second year with the league, she was named to the starting line up of the WNBA All-Star game, making her just the third Canadian to play in the All-Star game. Now playing for the Phoenix Mercury, Nurse has represented Team Canada in 104 games at various FIBA, Olympic and Pan American tournaments since 2011 and recently competed at the Tokyo Olympic games with our Senior Women's National Team. Nurse and the Phoenix Mercury take on the Las Vegas Aces to kick off their semifinals series of the WNBA Playoffs later today.
