National Championships Notes: Day One of Play Completed - Manitoba, Ontario & more start off strong

ST John’s, NFL. (August 6, 2024)—The Canada Basketball 15U and 17U Men’s and Women’s National Championships completed their first week of play in Toronto and St John’s today. The tournament runs from August 5th to 10th, 2024.

15U Girls

  • Manitoba goes 2-0: Madeleine Hamiel leads the way with 21 points scored in both games today to grab wins against Newfoundland & Labrador and Nova Scotia, showcasing Manitoba’s ability to close in crunch time.some text

  • Alberta and Ontario make statement wins today against New Brunswick and Quebec to open up their National campaign.some text
    • Both teams had 3 or more players in double-digit scoring numbers after the game.
  • At the end of the night, New Brunswick got back on track to defeat hosts Newfoundland & Labrador, and British Columbia got a big win against Saskatchewan with a 25-point effort from Puneet Deol.

17U Girls

  • Northwest Territories suffer two big losses, finishing 11-115 against New Brunswick and 6-123 against British Columbia.
  • Saskatchewan pulls out a 63-57 victory over Nova Scotia in a thrilling end to the fourth quarter.some text
    • They were led by Ryan Deutscher’s 22 points, and Jael Wells added 18 points to get the win.
  • Ontario and Quebec record wins over Alberta and Manitoba, starting the 17U tournament undefeated.
  • Hosts Newfoundland & Labrador get the 61-56 win against Prince Edward Island.some text
    • Sarah Reid recorded an 18-point, 12-rebound double-double in the win.

15U Boys

  • Two teams hit over 100 points in their wins today: New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.
  • All 15U Men’s teams won by a margin of 20+ points, with Manitoba, Quebec, Ontario, and Saskatchewan also getting in the win column.
  • Manitoba’s Terry Ogbeide leads all 15U Men’s scorers with 23 points per game (through one game).
  • Hosts Newfoundland & Labrador’s Blake Lane leads with 12 rebounds per game (through one game).
  • Nova Scotia’s Elijah Mantley leads in assists, dropping six assists on day one.

17U Boys

  • Three teams finish with over 100 points in their wins today: New Brunswick, Ontario, and Manitoba.some text
    • Ontario is led by Jordan Charles, who scored a game-high 33 points in their win against Quebec. Charles most recently represented Canada at the U17 National level, playing in the FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup.
  • Nova Scotia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan all won today, and at least three players scored in double digits.

The Canada Basketball 15U & 17U National Championships are the premier national amateur sports events for the Canadian basketball community. Each summer, Canada’s top next generation of high-performance athletes in the 15U and 17U age groups compete for the national championship title while proudly representing their home province/territory.
