Ontario defeats B.C. 84-74 to capture Canada Basketball 17U Women’s National Championship

SHERBROOKE, Québec (August 6, 2022) -- In Canada Basketball 17U Women’s National Championship action, Ontario captured the gold with an 84-74 victory over British Columbia behind a fantastic 25-point, 11-rebound double-double from Deniya Prawl and a 10-point, nine-rebound, four-assist, five-steal effort from Cyanne John. British Columbia was led by Caitlin Gingras who scored 28 points, and Lauren Rust who had 15 rebounds in the loss.

Despite Ontario taking the win, this was a close game throughout. Ontario held a one-point lead, 20-19, after the opening quarter and a four-point lead, 38-34 at the half. Things remained tight in the third with British Columbia getting within a point after a layup from Ryenn Schutz with 23 seconds remaining to go into the third trailing 56-55.

After Gingras opened fourth quarter scoring with a three-pointer to get British Columbia within two, the teams traded buckets and free throws until a three-point play from Prawl kicked off an 8-0 run for Ontario to go ahead by double figures on a layup from Micaela Carter with 4:40 remaining. British Columbia responded with a three from Jade Huynh, but couldn’t get the stops needed down the stretch to complete a comeback and Ontario closed out the victory.

In the bronze medal game, Alberta defeated Québec 73-61 behind a 19-point, 11-rebound double-double from Haley De Walle. Brigitte Olson added 15 points,  six assists and six steals as Alberta outlasted Québec down the stretch to collect the victory. Celia Stracks led Québec in the loss with 14 points in the loss.

In a close game to start, the score was tied at 21 after the first quarter. Alberta began to pull away in the second when they opened the quarter on a 12-0 run to take a 33-21 lead with 6:51 remaining in the half. Alberta ended up outscoring Québec 31-14 in the quarter to lead 52-35 at the halftime break.

A 7-0 run for Québec, capped by a three-pointer from Patricia Augustin, trimmed the deficit to single digits with 2:47 remaining in the third. Olson responded with a three-pointer for Alberta and then free throws from de Walle kept Alberta in front by 11 heading into the final quarter.

When a layup from Aicha Hassan-Omar got Québec within seven points with 4:02 remaining in the game, Alberta responded by scoring nine straight points, including another three-pointer from Olson to extend the lead back to 14 points with under two minutes remaining. Alberta took care of business at the free throw line down the stretch to maintain their lead and secure the victory.
