MAPLE RIDGE — Kolbie Orum has always thrived in the paint, but as she has discovered her ability to impact so many other areas of the court, taking a few steps away from that basketball canvas has allowed her to see the bigger picture and her bright future within it.

That’s why, coming off a summer spent within Canada Basketball’s national cadette program, the 6-foot-3 Grade 11 standout with the Maple Ridge Ramblers had a pretty simple request for head coach Don Herman when practices for the high school season began in November.

“I told him that I wanted to practice more as a forward,” Orum laughed earlier this week of her evolving mindset, one which reflects the new position she played as a member of the Canadian U-16 team which finished third this past June at the FIBA Americas zone championships in Mexico and thus qualified for this summer’s World Championships. South Kamloops’ Emma Wolfram and Anmol Mattu of Steveston-London were the other B.C. players on the team.
