Canadian Men looking to close out Group Phase undefeated
After opening the Paris 2024 Olympics with wins against Greece and Australia, Canada will now take on No. 2 ranked Spain in their final game of the Group Phase. Canada last faced Spain at the 2023 FIBA Basketball Men’s World Cup where they earned an 88-85 victory behind a 30-point seven-assist performance from Shai Gilgeous-Alexander who scored or assisted on Canada's final 17 points of the game. Canada finished third at the World Cup, earning the program’s first ever medal at the event. In Canada's most recent game in Paris, Gilgeous-Alexander overcame foul trouble in Canada’s 93-83 victory over Australia on Wednesday, finishing with 16 points four rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots in 26 minutes. While Canada is 2-0 in Paris, Spain opened their Olympics with a 92-80 loss against Australia before picking up an 84-77 win against Greece behind a 19-point, 12-rebound double-double effort from Santi Aldama and 13 points from veteran point guard Sergio Llull.
Women’s 3x3 Team look to continue stacking wins
The Canadian Women’s 3x3 Team suffered their first loss in Paris early on Thursday morning, falling to Germany 19-15. Canada bounced back in their second game of the day, taking down home-team France 13-9 in a hard-fought defensive battle. The win moved Canada to a tournament-best 3-1 record through three days of pool play. Canada pulled out the win against France in front of a packed house of supporters for the home team. Though they weren’t rooting for the Canadians, Team Canada appreciated the boost their energy provided. “The French crowd was absolutely bananas in the best possible way,” Kacie Bosch said. “It was so fun.” Katherine Plouffe agreed with Bosch. “That was like the top of the energy in any 3x3 game for sure - lots of energy and even though it was for France, we also take that, too, it’s fun to silence the crowd,” Plouffe said.
Barrett bringing his best
Through Canada’s first two games in Paris, RJ Barrett has led the way. In the team’s victory against Greece, Barrett scored 23 points. He followed that up with a 24-point, seven-rebound, five-assist performance against Australia on Wednesday. Barrett’s 24 points were the most by a Canadian at the Olympic Men’s Basketball Tournament since Steve Nash scored 26 points against FR Yugoslavia at Sydney 2000. "I’ve been playing with RJ for a long time, and RJ’s a dog,” Lu Dort said. “He’ll always show up, he’ll always be aggressive. We need him to play like that, so he's been doing a great job." Barrett became the first Canadian with back to back 20-point games at the Olympics since Todd MacCulloch in 2000 and is averaging 23.5 points on 59.3 percent shooting from the floor and 40 percent shooting from beyond the arc in Canada’s first two games in Paris. "I'm out there with Shai, one of the best players in the world,” Barrett said. “Just playing with him, the whole team is open because he draws so much attention. We're just really out there trying to help him."
