Women’s 3x3 off to a hot start

The Canadian Women’s 3x3 Team opened play in Paris with a dominant 22-14 victory over Australia on Tuesday. Katherine Plouffe led the way with a 10-point performance, while Michelle Plouffe added eight points and five rebounds as Canada jumped out to an early lead and didn’t look back.

The Canadians wasted no time securing their first victory, recording the fastest game so far in the Olympics 3x3 Tournament, defeating Australia in 8:38 minutes. “It was important for us, no matter who we played, to come out and be aggressive, get our chemistry going, get the yips out (as Paige says),” Katherine Plouffe said after the win. “It was good to be out on the court finally - we got here a week ago and we just wanted to get on there and play.” After taking a quick 6-0 lead, Canada's advantage ballooned to 15-2 at the midway point before Australia started their offensive attack. WIth such a large deficit to try to cut into, the Aussies ran out of time and Canada was victorious.

Points on the board

While Katherine Plouffe led Canada with 10 points in Tuesday’s victory, she was matched by China’s Mingling Chen who also recorded a 10-point performance in China’s 21-19 OT victory over host-team France. Canada will face the No. 1 ranked China on Tuesday at 12 p.m. ET/9 a.m. PT. The 24-year-old Chen also recorded seven highlights in Tuesday's victory for China, including the shot to put China in front with 10 seconds remaining in regulation until Hortense Limouzin scored at the buzzer for France to force overtime. In the extra session, Lili Wang drilled a two-pointer in the first minute to seal the win for China. Canada’s 22-point win over Australia put the Canadians at the top of the team leaderboard for points, while their four two-pointers in the victory were also tops for the day.

Senior Men’s National Team Quarterfinal bound

Before the Women’s 3x3 Team took to the court to defeat Australia on Monday, the Senior Men’s National Team defeated Australia 83-73 after pulling away in the fourth where they outscored Australia 21-13 in the final quarter. RJ Barrett had a monster game with 24 points, seven rebounds and five assists, while Shai Gilgeous-Alexander overcame early foul trouble to finish with 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting to go with four rebounds, three assists, three steals and two blocked shots. Dillon Brooks also added 16 points while Lu Dort added 11 points, and Dwight Powell grabbed nine rebounds. Dort’s defence on Australia’s Josh Giddey helped to change the game in the second half as he held the point guard to just four points after Giddey went off for 15 points in the first half.

Later in the day, after France defeated Japan and Germany defeated Brazil, the Canadian men officially advanced to the tournament quarterfinals. Canada has now reached the quarterfinals in the last five Olympics they have appeared in.
