RJ Barrett and Aaliyah Edwards have been selected as the Toyota Players of the Week for the week of March 21 to March 27.
Barrett averaged 25 points, 8 rebounds, 3 assists over four games last week getting to the free throw line an average of 10 times per game, leading the Knicks to a 3-1 record while the team had to handle multiple injuries. The 6’6” guard from Mississauga, ON was a five-star recruit and named the Naismith Prep Player of the Year and the Gatorade National Player of the Year before signing to Duke University (NCAA). Barrett declared for the 2019 NBA Draft after his rookie year, where he was selected as the 3rd pick in the first round of the 2019 NBA Draft. Representing Team Canada, Barrett was named MVP at the 2017 FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup after leading his team to a gold medal and most recently competed with the Senior Men’s National Team at the FIBA OQT in Victoria last summer.
Edwards had a big week in the NCAA March Madness Tournament averaging 9.5 points, 8 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game in the Sweet Sixteen and Elite 8, helping UCONN move onto the Final Four. The 6’3” guard from Kingston, ON attended Crestwood Prep College before signing to University of Connecticut, where in her rookie year last year she was named to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team and was named the BIG EAST Sixth-Woman of the year. Previously, Edwards has played over 30 games for team Canada since 2017, most recently representing Canada at the FIBA Women’s Americup 2021 and making her Olympic debut at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and was the youngest player on the team.
