Senior B Women's Team Beats Japan Denso Iris at Jones Cup

(Toronto, Ont. August 21, 2014) – For the second day in a row, Canada’s Senior B Women’s National Team finished with a win at the 36th annual William Jones International Cup, beating Japan Denso Iris 79 – 58 in Taipei, Taiwan.

Jamie Weisner (Clarkson, Wash.) paced Canada on offense with a game-high 15 points, including a perfect three-for-three from beyond the arc and adding seven rebounds in the win. Korissa Williams (Amherstburg, Ont.) just missed on the double-double, finishing with 10 rebounds and eight points.

The side from Japan had cut the Canadian’s lead to six heading into the final quarter of action. Stifling the Japanese comeback effort, Canada was able to pull away for a comfortable 19-point margin of victory.

“We responded well to adversity during the third quarter when Japan closed the gap,” said Weisner after the victory. “We never got down on ourselves and utilize our strengths and were able to keep our match-up in front of us. Hopefully we can build on the strides we made today.”

Once again, size on the glass was a major asset for the Canadians, out-rebounding their opponents 48 to 21, allowing for quick transition buckets and prime positioning in the low-post for second-chance scoring opportunities.

Canada’s next game will be against Team Korea Friday, August 22 at 2:00 a.m. EST.
