Senior B Women's Team Beats Team Korea 67-57 at Jones Cup

(Toronto, Ont. August 22, 2014) – The good times continue to roll at the Jones Cup for the Senior B Women’s Team, as the Canadians extended their win-streak to three games with a 67 – 57 victory over Team Korea in Taipei.

Canada relied on the starters to carry the load offensively, with Emily Potter (Winnipeg, Man.) leading the way with 16 points and six rebounds with Saicha Grant-Allen (Hamilton, Ont.) and Jamie Weisner (Clarkson, Wash.) each adding ten points apiece. Off of the bench, Adut Bulgak (Edmonton, AB) provided a major boost on the boards, totalling 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in 18 minutes of play.

After trailing for most of the game, Team Korea was able to provide a scare for the Canadians, leading by two points heading into the decisive quarter of play. For the first time at the Jones Cup, Canada found itself playing from behind with the game very much on the line.

Yet after a dominant 20-point third quarter for the Koreans, Canada doubled-down on defense, allowing only five points in the final frame.

“I am very proud of our effort tonight,” said head coach Fabian Mackenzie. “We were down by four and Korea was coming after us. The girls responded very well and played relentless defense. Karly Roser and Sami Hill shut down their star player with a tremendous defensive effort.”

“It was our first time being down in the tournament thus far,” Roser (Hamilton, Ont.) added. “We showed the Canadian style of our play in our defensive effort, especially in the fourth quarter. This brings us one step closer to our goal of being undefeated in this tournament.”

Canada’s next game will be against the Chinese Taipei’s A Team Friday, August 23 at 6:00 A.M. EST.
