Senior Men’s National Team Announced

Canada Basketball has announced the group of men who will represent Canada as the Senior Men’s National Team (SMNT) at the upcoming FIBA Americas Championship for Men in Caracas, Venezuela.

The team will feature seven veteran returning players from the 2011 edition of the SMNT, while five athletes will be making their official international debuts as members of the senior squad. This roster includes a record-number of four NBA players representing Team Canada in FIBA competition with Joel Anthony (Miami Heat), Cory Joseph (San Antonio Spurs), Andrew Nicholson (Orlando Magic) and Tristan Thompson (Cleveland Cavaliers).

Head coach Jay Triano spoke to the recent developments surrounding the team, saying that, “Kyle (Landry)'s injury is another tough loss for our program this summer and we wish him a speedy recovery. At this time we will not have to make any more cuts as Kris Joseph made the difficult decision to leave the team as he has a unique opportunity to play in China. We expect both of these players to be important pieces of our program as we move forward.”

On Friday, August 30, the SMNT will take on Jamaica to begin the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship for Men. Team Canada’s tournament-opener is set for 11:30 a.m. (ET). The 10-team competition will take place over the course of 13 days, after which one team will be crowned champions of the FIBA Americas zone and four teams will have qualified for the 2014 FIBA World Cup.
