JAKARTA, Indonesia (August 24, 2023) – Canada Basketball announced Thursday the Senior Men’s National Team roster for the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023.
“With this team, we’ve assembled a group of players which we believe can compete with any team in the world,” said Senior Men’s National Team head coach Jordi Fernández. “Every time we step onto the court, I know that they will proudly represent Canada, and I truly hope fans in Canada will show them the support and admiration they deserve because we have an opportunity to do something special for the country.”
Canada's roster features three players with previous World Cup experience, including captain Kelly Olynyk who will be playing in the tournament for the second time after representing Canada at the 2010 FIBA World Championship. Olynyk is one of seven current NBA players on Canada’s roster.
Canada is in Group H and will face France (August 25 - 9:30 a.m. ET), Lebanon (August 27 - 5:45 a.m. ET) and Latvia (August 29 - 9:30 a.m. ET) in the Group Phase in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Canada went 3-2 in exhibition games in Germany and Spain, including a thrilling come-from-behind 113-112 overtime win over Germany to claim the DBB Super Cup, as well as an overtime victory over Spain, the defending World Cup champions and top-ranked team in the FIBA World Ranking presented by Nike.
This will be Canada’s 15th appearance in the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup (formerly World Championship for Men), with their highest finishing being back-to-back sixth-place finishes in 1978 and 1982.
The FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023, set to take place from August 25 to September 10, will feature the best 32 men’s teams. The Group Phase will take place in the Philippines, Japan and Indonesia, with the Final Phase to follow in the Philippines capital city of Manila.
In the Group Phase of the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023, every team plays against the three other teams in its group. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the second round, with the results of the three games from the opening round will carry over to this second round. In the second round, every team will play against the two teams in their group that they did not face in the first round. Following that round, the top two teams from each group will advance to the medal round.
The Canadian men can directly qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games with a top-two finish amongst teams from the Americas at the FIBA Men’s Basketball World Cup 2023.
