Senior Women Beat Serbia in World Cup Tune-up

Team Canada continues preparing for the FIBA Worlds

(Toronto, Ont. August 26) – Canada’s Senior Women’s National Basketball team continued their preparation for the FIBA World Championship for Women with a  73-54 win over Serbia in Karlovy Vary (Carlsbad), Czech Republic.

Miranda Ayim (London, Ont.) was Canada’s leading scorer with 18 points while also totaling 6 rebounds. Kia Nurse (Hamilton, Ont.) added 12 points while Katherine Plouffe (Edmonton, Alta.) had 9.  Her sister, Michelle Plouffe (Edmonton, Alta.) had 6 rebounds.

Jovana Rad was Serbia’s top scorer with 11 points.

“Tonight was a good example of learning from past experiences,” said head coach Lisa Thomaidis. “We talked a lot about improving our ball-screen defense and our help-side. Our guards did a great job of putting pressure on Serbia and really got through the screens well.

“It was a great team win and everyone was contributing. [We had] very balanced scoring, a well-rounded team-effort on the offensive end but we really take pride in our defense and I thought that showed by holding Serbia to 54 points.”

Canada plays Korea tomorrow August 27 at 1:30 P.M. EST.  Follow Canada Basketball on Twitter @CanBBall or visit www.basketball.ca for more information on tomorrows game.
