Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Aaliyah Edwards have been selected as the Toyota Players of the Week for February 1-7.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander had a stellar week in the NBA, averaging 25 points, 6 assists and 6 rebounds in two games with the Oklahoma City Thunder. So far this season, the 6'6" Hamilton, ON native has averaged 22.6 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 6.6 assists per game. He recently earned Toyota Player of the Week honours just a few weeks ago in the beginning of January for his impressive start to the 2021 NBA season. Drafted 11th overall in 2018, the 22-year-old previously represented Canada in 2016 at the FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Chile where he helped win a silver medal.
Aaliyah Edwards set a new career-high in UCONN’s win over St. Johns with an impressive 22 points in their 94-62 victory. The freshman also added nine rebounds, one block and one steal. The 19-year-old has had a great showing so far in her rookie year, averaging 9.3 points per game. Edwards was recently invited to the Senior Women’s National Team Virtual Training Camp earlier this month as they prepare for the Olympics this summer. Previously, Edwards helped Canada post an undefeated 3-0 record at the FIBA Women’s Olympic Pre-Qualifying Americas Tournament in 2019, played in the FIBA U19 Women's Basketball World Cup 2019 and the FIBA Women's AmeriCup 2019.
