VICTORIA, British Columbia (August 23, 2022) - Canada Basketball announced Tuesday the 17 athletes participating in Senior Men's National Team AmeriCup training camp this week ahead of the FIBA AmeriCup 2022.
The FIBA AmeriCup 2022 returns to Brazil for the first time since 1984, when it was held in São Paulo, with the 19th edition of the tournament running September 2-11, 2022 at the Geraldão Arena in Recife. Fans in Canada can catch all the action streaming live on Courtside 1891.
Training camp will take place in Victoria from August 22-25. In addition to the training camp ahead of the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 in Victoria, Canada Basketball and the Senior Men’s National Team program are also hosting a FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 Qualifiers training camp as well.
Nathaniel Mitchell, an assistant coach on Nick Nurse’s Senior Men’s National Team staff, will assume the role of head coach for the FIBA AmeriCup 2022. Mitchell made his Team Canada head coaching debut earlier this summer at home at the inaugural GLOBL JAM. Members of his staff from that competition return for the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 as he'll be joined on the bench by assistant coaches Dave DeAveiro and Scott Morrison, as well as Michael Meeks.
Canada is in Group A and will face hosts Brazil (Sept. 2, 7:10 p.m. ET), Uruguay (Sept. 3, 4:40 p.m. ET), and Colombia (Sept. 5, 10:10 a.m. ET) in the Group Phase. The two best finishers in each group as well as the two best third-place teams in the competition will move on to the quarterfinals.
Canada went 3-1 to finish atop Group C in the FIBA AmeriCup 2022 Qualifiers to successfully qualify for the upcoming FIBA AmeriCup 2022.
Canada is currently ranked 18th in the FIBA World Ranking presented by Nike.
