(Toronto, Ont. August 24) – Canada finished its Zafer Cup tournament with a 65-56 loss to Team Brazil in Turkey. After their win against Australia and a loss to host Turkey, Canada finishes their Zafer Cup bid 1-2 in preparation for the upcoming World Championship for Women.

“This tournament was a tremendous learning experience for us,” said head coach Lisa Thomaidis. “We played three top quality opponents in three days and did some very good things. These games are about identifying our gaps and areas that need improving prior to worlds, and we've done just that.”

Miah-Marie Langlois (Windsor, Ont.) led the Canadians in scoring with 13 points, adding four rebounds and three assists. Miranda Ayim (Chatham, Ont.) and Tamara Tatham (Brampton, Ont.) each added 12 points.

Brazil’s Taina Mayara Da Paixao had a standout performance for the victors, totalling 24 points, nine assists and three rebounds; teammate Clarissa Cristina Dos Santos added a 16-point, 11-rebound double-double.

This was the fourth time this summer that the Canadians and Brazilians have squared off and the first time on international soil. Canada hosted Brazil in Edmonton, Alberta in June at the inaugural Edmonton Grads International Classic, beating the Brazilian side in three straight games.

Canada will have a day’s rest before taking on Serbia on August 26 at 11:00 A.M. EST.
