TORONTO (June 13, 2024) – Twenty-three of Canada’s top age-group players have been selected to attend a #FuellingTheFuture G Camp as Canada Basketball’s U17 Men's National Team trains ahead of the FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2024.

The training camp will be held at Humber College’s North Campus Gymnasium from June 11-18.

The FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2024 will run from June 29 to July 7 in Istanbul, Turkey.

All the action will be streaming live on FIBA’s YouTube channel.

The 16 teams competing have been divided into four groups of four teams each. Canada is in Group D and will compete against Germany (June 29, 8:00 a.m. ET), Egypt (June 30, 5:30 a.m. ET), and Australia (July 2, 10:30 a.m. ET) in Group Phase play.

Following the Group Phase, all sixteen teams will advance to the competition's Final Phase with a single-elimination format in place from the Round of 16 onwards.  The winners of the Round of 16 will advance to the quarterfinals, while the other teams will play in the Classification Games for places 9-16.

Chris Cheng will return as head coach of Canada’s U17 Men’s National Team and be joined on the bench by assistant coaches Jason Dawkins, Willy Manigat, and Peter Guarasci.  This coaching staff led Canada’s U16 Men’s National Team to a silver medal last summer at the FIBA U16 Americas Championship 2023.

Canada qualified for the FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2024 with a second-place finish at the FIBA U16 Americas Championship 2023 last summer.

This year’s FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup will be the event's seventh edition with Canada’s highest finish at the tournament being a bronze medal at the 2010 FIBA U17 World Championship for Men. Several Senior Men’s National Team players dominated the event in the past, including RJ Barrett, Andrew Wiggins and Jamal Murray.

Canada finished 9th at the FIBA U17 Men’s Basketball World Cup 2022 and is looking to build on that result this summer.

Players selected to attend training camp were invited to a Canada Basketball Men’s High Performance National Team Age-Group Assessment Camp.

Canada is currently ranked 9th overall in the FIBA World Ranking presented by Nike, following the conclusion of the FIBA 2023 Youth Events.
