Canada won their second exhibition game in their summer of training, beating Brazil 79-72 at the Saville Centre.

Four straight points from #4 Miah-Marie Langlois got the evening started for Canada, aided by some fast-break miscues from Brazil. A distinct advantage at the free throw line propelled Canada to a 22-16 lead at the end of the first.

Defense ruled the early stages of the second quarter until Miranda Ayim netted five straight for the home side. Brazil countered with a 5-0 run of their own, sparked by Patricia Ribeiro who scored 6 second quarter points. Canada regained the momentum with back to back 3’s from Courtnay Pilypaitis and Miah-Marie Langlois seizing the 42-31 halftime lead.

The early third quarter remained as physical as the first half was before play opened up leading to easier buckets for both sides. Canada’s scoring was punctuated by two late tough inside finishes from Krysten Boogaard.  The back and forth quarter saw Canada maintain its double digit advantage pushing the spread to 13 with a score of 61-48 at the end of 30 minutes.

Brazil carried the play in the first seven minutes of the 4th lead by seven points from Patricia Ribeiro cutting the Canadian lead to five. A big deep corner 2 as the shot clock expired from Kim Gaucher in the final minute put Canada back up seven. Canada would keep Brazil at bay the rest of the way closing out the 79-72 win.

Player of the game for Brazil with 17 points was Patricia Ribeiro.

Player of the game for Canada with 13 points and six rebounds was Kim Gaucher.

Other solid Canadian performances from Miranda Ayim who also registered 13 points and Miah-Marie Langlois who scored 12.

Canada goes for the sweep of the Edmonton Grads International Classic tomorrow night at 7 p.m. at the Saville Community Sports Centre.
