U15/U17 Girls National Championships: Day Two Recap

Manitoba bounces back with convincing win over Alberta on Day 2 of the National Championships!

The U17 Manitoba team won in convincing fashion over the U17 Alberta girls in a feature game of the day, 70 to 48. Manitoba bounced back from a 20 point lose the day before to Saskatchewan to even their record at 1-1.

After coming off an emotional overtime win against Quebec the previous day, Alberta was overwhelmed by Manitoba with a strong run in the second quarter putting the game out of reach.

Manitoba was lead by the all around play of Kyanna Giles with 19 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 3 steals, Lana Mackic who chipped in with 12 points, 7 rebounds and 2 steals and Keylyn Filewich who contributed 14 points and 6 rebounds!

With Quebec bouncing back to defeat Saskatchewan this afternoon, 57 to 51, it places Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba and Quebec at a 1-1 record heading into important match-ups tomorrow. Alberta will face off against Saskatchewan while Quebec challenges Manitoba.

In other tournament news, the U15 Alberta girls moved to 2-0 defeating New Brunswick in a winner versus winner game, 58 to 47. Anika Steele lead Alberta with 16 points and 5 rebounds in only 18 minutes of play while Morgan Mudge had a strong all around floor game finishing with 8 points, 4 assists, 5 rebounds and 4 steals! New Brunswick was lead by the timely shooting of Rachel Farwell who ended up with a game high 17 points, 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

Other strong performances through the day came from Emily Dewey of the U17 Saskatchewan team contributing 17 points and 10 rebounds in a win over Quebec. Newfoundland and Labrador's Emma Power put in 20 points, 2 rebounds and 3 steals for her team while Jessica Jones from the U17 BC squad gave 20 points and 5 rebounds towards a winning effort against Nova Scotia!
