TORONTO, ON – The U16 Men’s National Team defeated the host team Argentina 76-62 to sweep Group B at the FIBA Americas tournament in Bahia Blanca, Argentina.

“Great win tonight -- to come in and play in a hostile environment against Argentina in Argentina. This win is another step in our process. We have to regroup and refocus in preparation for Dominican Republic,” said Head Coach David DeAveiro.

It was a physical contest with a total of 53 fouls called. Burlington, ON native Simisola Shittu only played 17 minutes due to foul trouble but was instrumental in the win. Shittu scored 15 points with a pair of threes, as well as grabbing eight rebounds. Lautaro Lopez led the Argentinean squad with scored 24 points on 8-21 shooting. For a full box score, click here.

Invigorated by the home crowd, Argentina came out with intensity. Their shots were falling early, but Canada quietly matched their offence and once play settled, the U16 Men’s National Team proved to be more consistent. After 10 minutes of play, Team Canada led 25-16.

As shown in the first two games, Canada’s length forced turnovers and allowed the team to score in transition. But the host team played strong defence of their own and held Team Canada in check. A dunk would put Argentina down only three and reignite the crowd, but Canada would weather the storm and lead 36-32 at half.

Canada came out of the locker room and attacked the rim constantly in the third quarter. Free throws and lay-ups followed the attacks and the team found a defensive rhythm to win the period 22-17 and 58-50 overall.

With an eight-point advantage, the U16 Men’s National Team did not let up. They continued to attack the glass and use their defence to protect the lead. Argentina put together a late run but Simisola Shittu put the game out of reach with a three with a minute and a half remaining. Canada would win xx-xx.

Now, Canada moves on to the semifinal where they will play the Dominican Republic. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m. EST. The game will be streamed on Youtube.com/FIBA.

Along with qualifying for the semifinals, Canada has also earned a berth in the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championships.
