Zaragoza, Spain -- The U17 Men's National Team is through to the U17 World Championship quarterfinals after beating Dominican Republic 79-52. Canada remains undefeated at the tournament.
"It wasn't pretty and it never is when you don't make open shots. Our defense was better in the 2nd half which gave us transition opportunities. We look forward to moving on in the tournament," said David DeAveiro, head coach of the U17 Men's National Team.
The starters for Canada were Andrew Nembhard, Ignas Brazdeikis, Danilo Djuricic, Rowan Barrett Jr. and Simisola Shittu.
Brazdeikis led the Canadian effort with an all-around performance. He scored 15 points with 10 rebounds on 6-13 shooting. Simisola Shittu had 13 points with 11 rebounds. Click here for full stats.
Canada looked to push the pace in the first quarter but struggled to make shots against the Dominican's zone defence. Preying on turnovers, the Dominican Republic jumped to a 17-12 lead after 10 minutes of play.
The U17 Men's National Team would bounce back in the second, grinding it out to tie the game at 21 with three minutes left in the half. Despite being off from beyond the arc, Canada held a 29-24 advantage at half time, holding Dominican Republic to only seven points in the second quarter.
Canada hits its stride in the third quarter. Threes starting falling off drive-and-kick action, and the squad's full court press forced a number of turnovers. After 30 minutes of action, the U17 Men's National Team led 57-39.
With a healthy lead, Canada continued to pour it on. The bench carried the fourth-quarter effort and won the period 22-13.
Defence was the story of the game, as Canada forced 34 turnovers and won the rebounding battle 64-50.
Canada will play Turkey on June 30 at a time to be determined.
