U17 Women Down Latvia 60-57 in Overtime Showdown

(Zaragoza, Spain) The U17 women wrap up the second day of competition with a narrow 60-57 win over Latvia. This moves Canada into a 2-0 record, while Latvia slides to 0-2.  

Starting for Canada were Shaina Pellington, Hailey Brown, Alyssa Jerome, Sarah Donovan and Laeticia Amihere. Click here for full team roster.

Laeticia Amihere put on an extraordinary display, tallying 18 points and 21 rebounds, not to mention going 10/10 from the free throw line. The Canadian's defense is what was on display throughout this game, as the team totaled an impressive 59 rebounds and 10 blocks, holding Latvia to 24.59%FG.

Canada was able to establish a 15-11 lead by the end of the first quarter, as Latvia dug their way into early foul trouble.

Outscoring Canada in the second quarter 17-8, Latvia was able to take a 28-23 lead heading into half time.

Coming out strong in the second half, Canada was able to regain composure and cut Latvia's lead to a 2 point deficit, 39-37.

With both teams demonstrating their will to out hustle one another, Canada successfully managed to tangle with Latvia for the entire fourth quarter. Hailey Brown fouled with less than 40 seconds remaining  goes 2/2 from the line under pressure, putting the game at 50 apiece and sending it into overtime.  

With both teams playing with certain intensity in the overtime period, Canada was able to lock down Latvia right down to the last second. Allowing only 7 points and ultimately taking the game 60-57.
