U18 Men Open FIBA Americas With Big Win Over Argentina

VALDIVIA, CHILE – The U18 Men's National Team begin play at the 2016 FIBA Americas U18 Men’s Championship with a 92-58 victory over Argentina on Tuesday.

Canada's starting five included Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, O'Shae Brissett, Josip Vrankic, Nickeil Walker and Lindell Wigginton Click here for full team roster.

Wigginton paced Canada with 21 points, while Walker added 17 points and Jahvon Henry-Blair contributed 11 off the bench. Every Canadian player scored as their team moved its record to 1-0 and grabbed a share of first place in Group A.

"This was a very positive first game as a group this summer for our Junior National team,” says Roy Rana, Canada's head coach. “I am really pleased that we could go deep into our bench and play all 12 guys quality minutes.  Hopefully our depth and chemistry will continue to build throughout the tournament."

Gilgeous-Alexander had a team-high 7 rebounds and 5 assists as Team Canada. Argentina was led in scoring by Centre Lautaro Berra, who had 14 points. For game boxscore click here.

Canada never trailed, and the score was tied 0-0 for less that a minute before Wigginton hit a three-pointer to put his team in front. Argentina would keep things close in the first quarter, and got a late three from Lisandro Fernandez to cut Canada's lead to 17-16 after 10 minutes.

Canada took off with a 10-0 run to open the second quarter, and never looked back. The Canadians pushed its advantage to as high as 18 points before ending the half leading 46-31.

Just as in the second quarter, Canada came out flying in the third, scoring the first nine points of the period. Team Canada also finished the quarter strong, going on a 15-5 run to take a 75-41 lead into the final frame. Each team scored 17 points in the fourth quarter.
