The Development Women’s National Team (DWNT) fell 59-57 in a very tight affair to Ukraine at the 2013 FISU Summer Universiade. The loss, with Monday’s tournament-opening 76-48 victory over Japan, moves Canada to an even 1-1 standing in the competition.

Ukraine opened with a quick 10-1 run in the game’s first three minutes, but Canada came alive to play an even period thereafter. The quarter ended with the DWNT putting together a 12-9 stretch to head into the second behind by six. The ensuing back-and-forth frame saw three ties as the Ukraine could not hold off Team Canada. A pair of free throws by Windsor, Ont. native Miah-Marie Langlois gave the Canadian side a slim 28-27 lead at the half.

Both teams competed hard in the third quarter to swing momentum in their favour. The lead again changed hands several times, but Canada emerged on top after 30 minutes of play with a 48-43 advantage. The game’s tight play continued in the fourth, but it was Team Ukraine that came out ahead. A late basket by Langlois pulled Canada within two points, but time ran out in the Canadians’ bid to comeback.

Windsor Lancer Langlois had a strong showing, finishing with a game-high 14 points, while also leading Team Canada with seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Rachelle Coward of Dartmouth, N.S. added 12, including a game-tying shot late in the match. An aggressive effort on the glass proved to be a key factor in the match’s outcome as Team Ukraine outrebounded Canada 44-25 overall and 16-5 on the offensive end. The DWNT will complete preliminary round play with a match-up against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (ET). Chinese Taipei sits with a record of 2-0 following victories over Ukraine and Japan.
